Hydrogen Peroxide Concentrations Explained: A Safety Chart for Everyday Use

Hydrogen peroxide is sold in concentrations from 3% (the brown-bottle pharmacy version) up to 90% (a specialist industrial chemical). The concentration changes what the bottle can safely do, who can handle it, and what happens if it spills. This chart-led guide is for non-chemists who want to know which strength is in front of them and what it's actually for.

If you only remember one rule: the strength on the label is the most important number on the product, more important than the brand.

The numbers refer to weight (or weight/volume) of hydrogen peroxide in the solution. The rest is water and small amounts of stabiliser.


3% — the household strength

Three-percent hydrogen peroxide is what most people picture when they hear the term. It is sold in pharmacies for:

  • Mouth rinses (diluted further with water).

  • Minor wound cleaning (with caveats — see below).

  • Stain removal on white fabrics.

  • Household surface cleaning.

6% — the hair-bleach strength (and a few clinical uses)

Six percent — often labelled "20 volumes" because one volume of the solution releases 20 volumes of oxygen on decomposition — is twice the strength of household H₂O₂.

It is too strong for routine skin antisepsis and not the right product for everyday cleaning. Common uses:

  • Hair bleaching at home (with a developer cream).

  • Some dental and ear-care products at controlled dilution.

  • Niche surface disinfection.

A 6% bottle in the bathroom cabinet is fine if you actually use it for hair work; otherwise the 3% bottle is the right product.


9-12% — salon strength

Higher-strength bleach concentrations (30 and 40 volumes) are professional hair-colouring products. They will burn skin on contact, irritate eyes seriously, and are sold only through professional channels. Not for home use beyond their specific product.


27.5-35% — industrial / food-grade

This is the bulk strength manufacturers handle. Food-grade 35% is also used in some food-contact sanitisation processes. It is corrosive to skin, will bleach hair and clothing instantly, and gives off enough oxygen on decomposition to be a fire-safety concern around organics.

It is not a home product. Do not buy it for "cleaning around the house" — you will not handle it safely.


50% and above — specialist industrial

Above 50% concentration, H₂O₂ is a hazardous chemical handled in industrial settings with specific equipment, training, and licensing. It has no place in a home or general retail channel.


Why concentration changes the rules

Three things change as you climb the concentration ladder:

  1. Corrosivity. Higher concentrations cause increasing skin and eye damage on contact.

  2. Reactivity. Higher concentrations release more oxygen on decomposition, faster, which makes them more reactive around organics (combustibles, reducing agents).

  3. Storage requirements. Higher concentrations need vented containers, controlled temperature, segregation from incompatibles.

Quick household rules

  • The brown bottle from the pharmacy is 3%. Most other strengths are not retail products and should not be in a household cabinet.

  • Always check the label before using a bottle that has been sitting around. H₂O₂ slowly loses strength; an old bottle may be much weaker than the label suggests.

  • Never mix H₂O₂ with vinegar in the same container — they form peracetic acid which is more corrosive than either alone.

  • Never mix with bleach (sodium hypochlorite). The reaction releases chlorine-related fumes and is dangerous.

  • Keep H₂O₂ in its original opaque container, away from direct sunlight. Decanting into a clear container shortens shelf life.

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

What "volumes" means on a label

"Volumes" is an old but still common way to express H₂O₂ concentration:

  • 10 volumes ≈ 3% w/v

  • 20 volumes ≈ 6%

  • 30 volumes ≈ 9%

  • 40 volumes ≈ 12%

  • 100 volumes ≈ 30%

The number refers to how many volumes of oxygen one volume of solution will release on complete decomposition. It is the same product expressed in a different unit.


First-aid quick reference

Treat any contact with concentrated H₂O₂ as a chemical exposure:

  • Skin contact — flush with cool running water for at least 15 minutes. White patches will appear and resolve over several hours.

  • Eye contact — flush with running water for at least 15 minutes; seek medical attention immediately.

  • Ingestion of 3% household strength — small amounts usually harmless but call poison control. Do not induce vomiting.

  • Ingestion of higher concentrations — medical emergency; call emergency services immediately.

Can I dilute industrial 35% H₂O₂ to make 3% for home use?

Not safely. Diluting concentrated H₂O₂ requires controlled conditions, proper PPE, and a stabilised dilution medium. Buy the 3% product instead.


Is 6% hydrogen peroxide stronger or weaker than "20 volumes"?

They are the same. "20 volumes" is the old volumetric way of expressing 6% w/v.


Why does H₂O₂ come in a brown bottle?

Brown / opaque plastic blocks light, which decomposes H₂O₂. The bottle is part of the product.


How long does a 3% bottle stay good after opening?

Typically 6 months under normal household conditions, though the bottle may still be functional beyond that with reduced strength. The "fizz on a cut" is the rough strength indicator.


Is "food-grade" hydrogen peroxide safer to drink?

Food-grade refers to the residual impurities, not safety for ingestion. Drinking hydrogen peroxide is dangerous regardless of grade. Don't.


Can I use 3% H₂O₂ as a mouthwash directly from the bottle?

Most clinical advice is to dilute it 50:50 with water and use as a swish-and-spit, not swallow. Don't use daily — it can disturb oral microbiome. Ask a dentist.


What's the strongest H₂O₂ I can legally buy as a consumer in India?

The 6% / 20-volumes hair-bleach product is the upper end of common retail availability. Stronger products are industrial / professional-channel only.
