Ultrasound Gel for Veterinary Use: What's Different From Human-Grade


Veterinary ultrasound is a quietly large category — diagnostic clinics, equine practices, dairy farms, zoos, exotic medicine, and small-animal practices all use ultrasound, and all of them use ultrasound gel. This post is for veterinary buyers and clinic managers who want to know what gel to stock and where the practical differences with human-grade are.
Is veterinary ultrasound gel different from human ultrasound gel?
Chemically, almost not at all. The gel sold to vet clinics is the same water-based polymer composition as the gel sold to a diagnostic centre — water, carbomer or hydroxyethylcellulose thickener, glycerine humectant, preservative, pH adjuster. The differences are practical, not formulation:
Larger pack sizes (5 L jerry cans, 20 L drums for equine and dairy practice).
Looser regulatory framing — no need for medical-device-adjacent claims.
Lower per-litre price expectation.
Less emphasis on "hypoallergenic" claims (the patient is not going to complain).

Why fur changes the gel application
The biggest practical difference for vets is fur. Even a clipped patch of fur leaves enough hair to trap air pockets that scatter the ultrasound beam. Practical workflow:
Small animals (cats, dogs): clip the patch, then apply isopropyl alcohol to wet the residual hair and skin, then apply gel. Gel alone over even short fur produces noisy images.
Large animals (cattle, horses): the same in principle but on a larger area. Clipping a cow's flank for a routine pregnancy check is impractical; vets work around it with extra gel volume, IPA pre-soak, and patience.
Exotic / wildlife: depends on the species. Reptiles and amphibians don't need clipping; mammals do.
The gel itself doesn't change — the prep does. Vets buying gel should also be stocking 70% IPA, sometimes in the same SKU pair.
Pack sizes for veterinary practice
Small-animal practice mirrors human clinics: 250 ml or 500 ml squeeze bottle on each ultrasound machine, 5 L jerry can in the supply cupboard. Volumes are modest — a busy small-animal vet might use 5–10 L a month.
Large-animal practice — dairy reproductive work, equine repro and lameness scans, beef cattle — uses dramatically more gel per scan because of the surface area and fur. A dairy vet doing a herd-check day can go through 1–2 L in a session. SKUs to stock:
5 L jerry cans for in-clinic dispensing.
20 L (or 25 L) drums for high-volume large-animal practice.
250 ml bottles for vet bag / mobile kit use.
Mobile equine and dairy vets carry several 250 ml or 500 ml bottles in a vehicle case alongside their portable ultrasound; bulk gets refilled from drums at the practice.
What to avoid in vet ultrasound use
Oil-based lubricants. Damage transducer faces (true for human gel too). Never substitute.
Hand sanitiser. Useless acoustically; damages probes.
Soap and water as a stopgap. Bubbles, no acoustic match. Not a substitute.
Re-used contaminated gel. Dipping a contaminated probe back into the dispenser is a contamination route — use individual bottles or refill discipline.
Cost considerations

Buying in 5 L or 20 L cuts per-litre cost roughly in half versus the 250 ml SKU. Large-animal practices and animal hospitals should default to the drum or jerry can; small-animal practices to the 5 L.
Sterile gel for veterinary procedures
The same logic as human: sterile single-use packets for biopsy guidance, FNA, central-line placement and any contact with sterile fields or open wounds. Volumes are small but the indication is real — keep a small stock on hand.
What about probe covers and disposable sleeves?
Many vet practices use disposable probe covers (especially for transrectal large-animal scans) combined with standard non-sterile gel. The cover is the sterile barrier; the gel is just for acoustic coupling. Both inside the cover (between probe and cover) and outside the cover (between cover and patient).
Choosing a supplier
