Ultrasound gel — also called transducer or sonography gel — is the conductive medium between an ultrasound probe and a patient's skin. Below are direct answers to the 15 questions distributors, clinics and patients most often ask.

What is ultrasound gel made of?

Ultrasound gel is a water-based polymer solution — typically 90%+ water, with a thickening polymer (carbomer or hydroxyethylcellulose), a humectant (glycerine or propylene glycol), a preservative system and a pH adjuster. The aim is acoustic impedance matched to soft tissue, not lubrication or moisturisation.

Why is ultrasound gel needed?

Air is a very poor acoustic medium — even a thin air gap reflects nearly all of an ultrasound probe's sound waves. Gel fills that gap, allowing clean acoustic coupling between probe and skin.

What is the difference between ultrasound gel and ECG gel?

Ultrasound gel is formulated for acoustic transmission. ECG gel is formulated for electrical conductivity — it contains salts to carry electrical signals. They look similar but are not interchangeable.

What viscosity should ultrasound gel have?

A practical working range is 80,000–150,000 cP at 25°C on a Brookfield viscometer. Higher viscosity (around 200,000 cP) is used for intraoperative or upright-position scans.

Is ultrasound gel safe during pregnancy?

Yes. It is the standard medium for obstetric scans. The water-based, hypoallergenic, paraben-free formulations on the Indian market are designed for prenatal use. Consult your scanning clinician about any specific patient sensitivity.

What is sterile ultrasound gel and when is it used?

Sterile ultrasound gel is manufactured and packaged sterile, usually in single-use packets. It is used for intraoperative scans, biopsy and central-line guidance, neonatal scans on fragile skin, and any contact with open wounds or sterile fields.

How long does opened ultrasound gel last?

About 90 days under hygienic handling — capped, stored cool, no contamination at the refill point. Unopened shelf life is typically 24–36 months.

How should ultrasound gel be stored?

Between 5°C and 40°C, away from direct sunlight, in the original container with the cap closed. Never freeze — phase separation is irreversible. Avoid hot warehouses through Indian summers.

What pack sizes are common in India?

250 ml and 500 ml squeeze bottles for clinics, 5 L jerry cans for high-volume diagnostic centres and distributors, and 10–20 ml single-use packets for sterile applications.

What should I ask a supplier for?

Certificate of Analysis per batch covering viscosity, pH (target 6.5–7.5), preservative-efficacy test, microbial count and appearance. ISO 9001 at minimum. Production samples from current stock. Leak-proof induction-sealed packaging. Clear batch / expiry printing.

Is ultrasound gel hypoallergenic?

Most modern formulations are. "Hypoallergenic" means free of common skin allergens — fragrances, parabens, harsh preservatives. Always verify against the ingredient list rather than the label claim alone.

Can ultrasound gel stain linens or clothes?

Quality gels are non-staining and wash out cleanly. Cheap or improperly formulated gels can leave residues. Ask the supplier for wash-out test data for high-volume clinical accounts.

Is ultrasound gel safe on broken skin?

Standard (non-sterile) gel is intended for intact skin. For open wounds, abrasions or sterile fields, use sterile single-use gel packets.

What are the signs that a bottle of ultrasound gel has gone bad?

Phase separation (water and polymer split), discolouration, persistent foam, off-smell, visible turbidity at the cap, or biofilm. Any of these — discard the bottle.

Can I bulk-buy ultrasound gel at distributor pricing?

Yes. Indian wholesale benchmarks for mid-2026 sit around ₹35–55 per 250 ml bottle, ₹60–90 per 500 ml, and ₹350–500 per 5 L jerry can [VERIFY against current quote]. Bulk orders, contract supply and direct-from-manufacturer arrangements unlock the deepest pricing.
