Surgical spirit is one of the oldest first-aid products on the Indian shelf. Below are direct answers to the 12 questions most often asked.

What is surgical spirit?

A denatured alcohol product — usually ethanol or an ethanol-IPA blend — formulated for topical disinfection. Often contains methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen) or another denaturant.

Is surgical spirit the same as isopropyl alcohol?

No. Surgical spirit is a formulation; IPA is a single solvent. Some surgical spirit products are IPA-based, but most also contain ethanol, denaturants and excipients. Always read the label.

What is surgical spirit used for?

Skin disinfection (pre-injection wipe, wound prep), sterilising thermometers and tweezers, household surface disinfection, cleaning bedsores under nursing care.

Why is it called "surgical" spirit?

Historical naming — it was the topical disinfectant used for skin prep in surgical wards. The name persists even though many modern preps use chlorhexidine or povidone iodine.

Can I drink surgical spirit?

No. It contains denaturants that make it toxic — that is the point of the denaturant. Ingestion can be fatal; treat any swallowing as a medical emergency.

Is surgical spirit flammable?

Yes. Like all high-alcohol solutions, it is flammable until dry. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flames.

How is surgical spirit different from methylated spirit?

Methylated spirit is ethanol denatured with methanol — toxic on skin too. Surgical spirit uses less toxic denaturants and is intended for topical use.

Will surgical spirit dry my skin?

Yes, with repeated use. Like any alcohol-based product, it defats the skin. Use moisturiser if applying frequently.

Can I use surgical spirit on open wounds?

It will sting badly and may damage healing tissue. Saline is gentler for routine wound cleaning. Consult a doctor or pharmacist if unsure.

What are common pack sizes in India?

100 ml and 500 ml retail bottles for household and pharmacy use. Larger institutional packs are also available.

What should I look for when buying surgical spirit?

Check the label for: ingredient composition (ethanol or IPA base), net alcohol content, denaturant identity, batch and expiry. ISO 9001 supplier preferred; Drug Licence applicability matters for retail sale.

What is a fair wholesale price for surgical spirit?

Mid-2026 Indian wholesale: 100 ml bottle ₹25–45; 500 ml bottle ₹85–140 [VERIFY against current quote].
