Isopropyl Alcohol vs Ethanol: Which Disinfects Better and When

Both isopropyl alcohol and ethanol are effective surface disinfectants when used at the right concentration. At 70-80% in water, they kill most vegetative bacteria and many enveloped viruses with similar efficacy. The choice between them usually comes down to availability, regulatory category, smell, and downstream use — not raw biocidal power.
This article walks through how the two compare on disinfection, where each one is the better choice, and where buyers and home users get the comparison wrong.
The short answer
For most everyday surface disinfection:
70% isopropyl alcohol and 70-80% ethanol are both effective.
IPA evaporates slightly faster and leaves a fainter smell on hard surfaces.
Ethanol is the default in food-contact, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical contexts because of its broader regulatory acceptance for those uses.
IPA is the default in electronics cleaning, laboratory wipe-down, and industrial channels.

How they kill microbes
Both alcohols work the same way:
They disrupt the lipid envelope of bacteria and enveloped viruses.
They denature proteins inside the cell, killing it.
The 70-80% concentration matters for both. Pure alcohol (99% IPA or 96% ethanol) flashes off too quickly and coagulates surface proteins of microbes before it can penetrate. Neither alcohol reliably kills bacterial spores or non-enveloped viruses; both are weak against organic soil (you have to clean first, then disinfect).
Where IPA is the better choice
IPA tends to be preferred when:
Electronics and optics need cleaning. Higher-strength 99% IPA leaves no residue, dries fast.
The workflow needs a fast surface dry — high-throughput hospital surfaces, lab benches.
Pharmacopoeial-grade IPA is specified in a pharma SOP or cleanroom protocol.
You need a low-residue solvent for general cleaning around equipment.

Where ethanol is the better choice
Ethanol tends to be preferred when:
Food contact is involved. Ethanol-based sanitisers are widely permitted in food-handling contexts where IPA is not.
Cosmetic and personal-care formulations need an alcohol. Ethanol is the conventional choice for these.
WHO Formulation I is the recipe of record. WHO Formulation II uses IPA but the ethanol version is more widely deployed.
Pharmacopoeial compliance requires the specific monograph (e.g. for some pharma cleaning processes).

Concentration matters more than which alcohol
A 30% IPA is a poor disinfectant. So is a 30% ethanol. A 96% pure ethanol is also a poor surface disinfectant, for the same reason 99% IPA is. The concentration sits in a sweet spot near 70-80%; either alcohol is competent in that band.
If you have a choice between a 70% IPA and a 40% ethanol, the IPA is the better disinfectant. If you have a 70% IPA and a 70% ethanol, they are functionally similar. If you have a 99% IPA and a 96% ethanol, both need dilution before they are good surface disinfectants.
For most consumer choices, the bottle in front of you is sold at a sensible concentration; just don't dilute it further.
Contact time matters too
For both alcohols, the surface needs to stay visibly wet for the right contact time — typically 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on the target organism. Spray-and-wipe in two seconds gives neither alcohol time to work.

Common mistakes
Treating "alcohol" as a single product. Surgical spirit, IPA, ethanol, methylated spirit are all different products with different regulatory paths and slightly different properties.
Diluting 70% further with water. The 70% formulation is already optimised; further dilution weakens it.
Using either on visible blood or organic soil. Clean first, then disinfect.
Assuming ethanol-based products are "safer" because we drink the alcohol. Commercial denatured ethanol and surgical spirit contain denaturants making them toxic.
Safety reminders
Both alcohols are flammable. Both irritate eyes and mucous membranes. Both should be kept away from open flame, used in ventilated areas, and stored cool and capped. Neither is suitable for use on broken skin for prolonged periods.

Is ethanol or IPA better against SARS-CoV-2?
Both alcohols at 70-80% concentration are effective against SARS-CoV-2 (an enveloped virus) on hard non-porous surfaces with adequate contact time. Neither is meaningfully better than the other.
Is "rubbing alcohol" ethanol or IPA?

Does ethanol smell better than IPA?
A matter of taste — both have noticeable alcohol smells. IPA's note is slightly more chemical / fruity; ethanol is slightly sweeter.
Can I use vodka as a disinfectant?
Vodka is typically 40% ethanol — well below the 70% disinfection sweet spot. It is a poor disinfectant. Use the proper product.
Is IPA safe to use on plastic and rubber?
Most clinical plastics tolerate occasional 70% IPA wipes. Repeated heavy use can craze some plastics; check the manufacturer's compatibility note for sensitive equipment.
Are alcohol-based disinfectants effective on smartphones?
Yes — a 70% IPA wipe is widely recommended for smartphone screens. Avoid pooling and avoid the openings.
Can I store either alcohol indefinitely?
Both are shelf-stable for years in sealed opaque containers at moderate temperatures. Once opened, evaporation is the practical shelf-life limiter.
