Isopropyl Alcohol Price in India 2026: 70% Pharma vs Industrial Grade

Indicative 2026 bulk pricing for isopropyl alcohol in India runs ₹160–230 per litre for 70% pharma-grade in 5L pack and ₹110–170 per litre for 99% industrial-grade in drum quantities — and unlike most specialty chemicals the cheapest grade is NOT always the right choice for surface disinfection, where 70% outperforms 99%.

IPA pricing in India tracks the price of crude propylene, the rupee–dollar rate, and freight, so it moves more from quarter to quarter than gel or peroxide does. The 2026 ranges below are indicative; expect any single quotation to differ by ±10–15% depending on date and lane. A written quote with current freight is the only definitive number.

Indicative 2026 IPA price ranges

Grade and pack

Typical 2026 price

Per-litre cost

70% IPA pharma, 500 mL retail

₹120–250 per bottle

₹240–500 per litre

70% IPA pharma, 5L can

₹800–1150 per can

₹160–230 per litre

70% IPA pharma, 25L drum

₹3500–5000 per drum

₹140–200 per litre

70% IPA pharma, 200L drum

₹26000–38000 per drum

₹130–190 per litre

99% IPA industrial, 5L can

₹650–950 per can

₹130–190 per litre

99% IPA industrial, 25L drum

₹2800–4250 per drum

₹112–170 per litre

99% IPA industrial, 200L drum

₹22000–34000 per drum

₹110–170 per litre

Surgical spirit (denatured), 5L

₹500–800 per can

₹100–160 per litre

Note that the 30% gap between 70% pharma and 99% industrial is partly cost-of-water (70% IPA is 30% deionised water plus excise duty consideration) and partly grade — pharma-grade carries IP/BP testing overhead that industrial-grade does not.

Why pharma-grade 70% is not just "watered-down 99%"

It is tempting for a buyer to look at the higher per-litre cost of 70% pharma and ask why they shouldn't just buy 99% industrial and dilute it. Three reasons:

  1. Regulatory framework. Pharma-grade 70% is manufactured under cGMP-equivalent controls, tested against IP/BP/USP monographs, and supplied with a Certificate of Analysis. Industrial 99% has no such documentation.

  2. Water quality. Pharma 70% uses purified water (BP/IP grade). Dilution at site with municipal or RO water introduces ions, bacteria and trace organics that compromise disinfection.

  3. Excise and labelling. Pharma IPA carries documentation traceable for hospital and clinical use. Industrial diluted on-site does not.

For industrial cleaning of electronics or non-clinical surfaces, on-site dilution of 99% is fine. For hospitals, diagnostic centres and any setting where IP/USP traceability matters, pharma-grade 70% is the right answer.

Five drivers of price within IPA bulk grades

  1. Source country. Indian-manufactured IPA is generally a few rupees per litre cheaper than imported but supply chains move. Watch for tariff and freight swings.

  2. Grade documentation. Pharma-grade with full COA (IP/BP/USP), Reach/REACH conformance, or USP-NF traceability carries premium pricing.

  3. Denaturant package. Surgical spirit and denatured grades save on excise but limit the use case.

  4. Pack size. Drum quantities save ₹20–40/L over 5L cans. IBC quantities save another ₹10–20/L over drums.

  5. Freight and storage. IPA is a flammable Class 3 commodity in transport classification, which affects logistics cost and warehouse insurance.

Total cost of ownership for institutional buyers

For a hospital, pharmacy chain or laboratory, the sticker price is not the whole picture. Other costs:

  • Loss to evaporation. Open dispensing tins lose IPA fast. Sealed dispensers or pump bottles reduce loss meaningfully.

  • Storage and fire-safety compliance. IPA above modest threshold quantities triggers fire-safety requirements.

  • Container disposal. HDPE drums have resale value; carton-and-tin packaging does not.

  • Documentation overhead for pharma-grade in audited environments.

How a proper IPA quotation should read

  • Grade name and standard (e.g., "Isopropyl Alcohol 70% v/v, IP/BP/USP").

  • Assay range (e.g., 69.5–70.5% v/v).

  • Specific gravity, refractive index and other identity tests if pharma-grade.

  • Pack size, container material (HDPE recommended), MOQ.

  • Ex-works price per litre.

  • Freight cost or FOR-destination price.

  • GST treatment, HSN code, transport class.

  • Lead time and quote validity (usually 7–15 days for IPA because of price volatility).

  • COA reference.

A quote that does not reference the IP/BP/USP standard for pharma-grade material is incomplete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical 2026 wholesale price of 70% IPA pharma in India?

A fair anchor for 2026 is ₹140–190 per litre at 25L drum scale for IP-grade material with a current COA. Below ₹130/L scrutinise grade and water-quality documentation; above ₹220/L ask what is driving the premium (specialty packaging, branded private-label, very small MOQ).

How much does 99% industrial IPA save vs 70% pharma?

At 25L drum scale, expect 99% industrial to be ₹25–50 per litre cheaper than 70% pharma. Whether that saving is worth the loss of pharma-grade documentation depends on the application.

Do IPA prices in India track international markets?

Yes, more than most specialty chemicals. India imports some IPA and the domestic price tracks Singapore and Rotterdam reference prices with a freight and tariff overlay.

What is surgical spirit and why is it cheaper than IPA 70%?

Surgical spirit is denatured (typically with methyl salicylate and methylene blue) so it cannot be diverted for consumption. The denaturant saves the manufacturer the excise duty otherwise applied to potable spirits. Functionally it is similar to 70% IPA for external antiseptic use but is not interchangeable with pharma IPA in clinical compounding.

Is there an "industrial denatured" grade between pharma 70% and industrial 99%?

Yes — IP/USP-grade IPA at 70% concentration with denaturant added trades around ₹140–180 per litre at 200L drum scale, suitable for surface disinfection in non-clinical industrial environments.

How fast do IPA prices move?

A 5–10% week-on-week move on raw propylene can pass through to IPA wholesale prices within 30–60 days. Quotes from reputable suppliers have a 7–15 day validity window for that reason.

What MOQ is realistic for first-time bulk IPA orders?

One 200L drum (or four 25L drums) is the common first-order MOQ for pharma-grade material. Industrial-grade may have a lower MOQ if the supplier sells through a chemicals distributor.
