IPA for Vinyl Records, Optics & Camera Lenses

Vinyl records, camera lenses, telescope optics and binoculars all benefit from periodic cleaning. Isopropyl alcohol is one option — but it is not the only option, and there are real risks if applied wrong. This post is for collectors, photographers and astronomy hobbyists who want a careful approach.


Vinyl records

Cleaning vinyl with IPA is a long-running debate in the audiophile community. The short version:

  • Pure 99% IPA can dissolve some pressing-mould-release residues and is effective for cleaning new and used records.

  • Diluted IPA solutions (15–25% IPA in distilled water with a tiny amount of surfactant) are the standard for record-cleaning machines (Spin Clean, VPI, Pro-Ject).

  • Pure undiluted IPA on shellac 78 RPM records is dangerous — it can dissolve shellac. Never use on 78s.

  • For modern vinyl (LP, 12-inch single, 45 RPM), IPA-based cleaners are safe in normal use.

Never use household 70% IPA mixed with tap water — minerals deposit in the groove. Always use distilled water for the dilution.


Camera lenses

Modern camera lenses have multi-coated glass elements that can be damaged by aggressive solvents. A graded approach:

  1. Blower brush to remove loose dust. Always first.

  2. Lens-pen carbon tip for fingerprints — usually solves it.

  3. Microfibre cloth, dry or breath-misted for moderate smudges.

  4. Dedicated lens cleaning solution + microfibre cloth for stubborn marks.

  5. 99% IPA on a lens tissue as a last resort — sparingly, never pooled, never dripped.


Why not just go to IPA every time? Because repeated IPA exposure can degrade some multi-coatings over months and years. Reserve it for actually-stubborn marks.


When using IPA on a lens:

  • Apply IPA to the lens tissue, not the lens.

  • Wipe in a single direction from centre outward.

  • One pass; use a fresh side of the tissue if more is needed.

  • Allow to dry before storage.


Telescope and binocular optics

Coated optics on telescopes and binoculars are similarly delicate. The same graded approach as camera lenses applies. For larger optics (front objective lens, eyepiece elements), specialised optical cleaning solutions exist; 99% IPA can be used carefully but is not the first choice.


Sensor cleaning

Camera-sensor cleaning is a different beast. The sensor low-pass filter has a fragile coating. Dedicated sensor swabs come pre-saturated with the right cleaning solvent (often a methanol / ethanol blend, sometimes IPA-based). If your kit specifies IPA, use 99% — never 70%.

DIY sensor cleaning with home-supply IPA is risky; either invest in a proper kit or have it cleaned professionally.


What grade of IPA for optics

99% IPA, electronics or laboratory grade. The same low-residue, low-water spec used for PCB cleaning. Pharmacy 70% IPA is not appropriate for optics — the water content leaves spots, the additives or denaturants can damage coatings.


Application supplies

  • Lens tissue (single-use, lint-free).

  • Microfibre cloth (dedicated for optics; never the same cloth used on other surfaces).

  • Cotton swabs for tight spots.

  • Compressed air / blower brush.

Always start dry and graduate to wet only when needed.


Storage and shelf life

Tightly capped, 99% IPA stays effective for years. The risk in your collection is contamination — never let dust or fibres into the bottle. Decant small working amounts to a separate dropper or spray bottle.
