Hydrogen Peroxide for Aquariums & Fishkeeping

Hydrogen peroxide is one of the most useful and most misused chemicals in fishkeeping. Used correctly it controls algae, treats some parasitic and bacterial issues, and provides emergency oxygenation during power outages. Used wrong it kills your fish. This post is a practical reference for aquarium hobbyists and small-scale aquaculture buyers.

What H₂O₂ does in an aquarium

Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen — both harmless to fish in the right amounts. The transient release of free oxygen and oxidising radicals can:

• Damage algae cell walls (algae control).

• Disrupt parasite cell structures (some external parasites).

• Inactivate some bacteria and viruses on surfaces.

• Raise dissolved oxygen levels briefly (emergency oxygenation during power loss).

It does NOT — repeat, does NOT — work like a general medicine you can dose into the tank and expect to "treat" everything. Wrong concentrations cause gill damage, slimecoat loss, and rapid fish death.

Safe concentrations and methods

Two approaches:

Dip / bath treatment. A bucket of dechlorinated water with controlled H₂O₂ concentration; affected fish or plant placed in for a timed duration.

Spot treatment. Diluted H₂O₂ applied directly to algae patches with a syringe or pipette, with circulation off.

Whole-tank dosing. Rarely recommended for general hobbyist use; risk of fish loss high.

Typical ranges (3% H₂O₂ is the household standard; numbers below assume that):

Spot treatment of black-beard algae	1–2 ml of 3% H₂O₂ per 10 L tank water, with filter off, applied directly to algae
Plant dip for algae removal	2–3 ml of 3% per 1 L of dip water; 3–5 min dip
Snail / pest removal from new plants	1–2 ml of 3% per 1 L; 60–90 sec dip
Emergency oxygenation (power outage)	0.5–1 ml of 3% per 10 L every hour, sparingly

These are starting points only; sensitive fish (catfish, tetras, shrimp) and shrimp tanks require much lower concentrations or no dosing at all. Always test on a small area / sentinel fish.

What NOT to do

• Don't dose a tank with shrimp. Almost any H₂O₂ kills invertebrates fast.

• Don't combine with other treatments. H₂O₂ reacts with many fish meds — wait days between.

• Don't dose without circulation control. Oxygen blooms or chemistry imbalance can kill in minutes.

• Don't dose if you have nothing to test with. A dissolved oxygen test kit and a watchful eye are minimum prerequisites.

Aquaculture vs hobbyist use

Commercial aquaculture and fish hatcheries use H₂O₂ for hatchery disinfection, egg surface treatments and limited parasite treatments. Concentrations and protocols are species-specific and based on veterinary aquaculture guidance — not the hobbyist-bucket numbers above. If you are running a commercial setup, consult an aquaculture veterinarian.

Where to buy 3% hydrogen peroxide

3% H₂O₂ is available at pharmacies in 100 ml and 500 ml bottles. For regular aquarium use, source from a stable specialty chemical supplier with good batch quality — old or weak H₂O₂ won't give the effect you expect and may lead to over-dosing as you compensate.

What if I have a large fish room?

Multi-tank fish rooms and aquaculture setups should consider:

• 5 L of 3% H₂O₂ as a working stock.

• Accurate dispensing pipettes / syringes.

• A dissolved oxygen meter for monitoring.

Never store concentrated industrial H₂O₂ near a fish room — risk of spills into tanks is catastrophic.

Shelf life and storage

Buy fresh; rotate FIFO. Opened 3% H₂O₂ loses strength noticeably after 30–60 days. Keep in original amber bottle, cool, dark, capped.

A consult-a-vet note

If your fish are sick and you are tempted to dose H₂O₂ as a treatment, please consider that mis-treatment usually kills faster than the original problem. Consult an aquatic vet or experienced aquarist before treating systemically.
