ECG gel — also called electrode gel — is the conductive medium between skin and ECG electrodes. Below are direct answers to the 12 questions hospital procurement teams and distributors most often ask.

What is ECG gel made of?

ECG gel is a water-based gel containing salts — typically potassium chloride or sodium chloride — at concentrations engineered for low skin-electrode impedance. It also contains a thickener, a humectant and a preservative.

How does ECG gel work?

It hydrates the outer skin layer and provides a salt-water bridge between skin and electrode, dropping impedance and allowing the heart's tiny electrical signals to reach the electrode cleanly.

Is ECG gel the same as ultrasound gel?

No. ECG gel is formulated for electrical conductivity (high salt). Ultrasound gel is formulated for acoustic transmission (low salt). They look similar and are routinely confused, but they cannot reliably substitute for each other.

What conductivity should ECG gel have?

Typical formulations sit between 5,000 and 20,000+ μS/cm. The right value depends on the electrode type and clinical workflow. The Certificate of Analysis should state the actual value.

Wet ECG gel vs solid hydrogel electrodes — which is right?

Solid-hydrogel disposable electrodes dominate routine ICU, OR and diagnostic ECG use. Wet gel is used for defibrillator paddle prep, stress tests, EEG, and reusable-electrode workflows. Hospitals stock both.

What pack sizes are common?

250 ml and 500 ml squeeze bottles for clinical use, 5 L jerry cans for hospital central stores and distributors, and 30 ml tubes for ambulatory / paramedic kits.

How long does opened ECG gel last?

60–90 days under disciplined handling. Unopened shelf life is 24–36 months at 5–40°C.

What causes a noisy ECG trace?

Most commonly skin prep, electrode placement, or cable issues — not gel quality. If noise persists across patients after these checks, suspect dried-out or expired gel.

Is ECG gel safe on sensitive skin?

Generally yes on intact skin. Adverse reactions usually trace to preservatives (parabens, formaldehyde donors) or to electrode adhesive — rarely to the gel itself. For neonates or known-sensitive patients, ask for a paraben-free formulation.

What should I ask a supplier for?

COA per batch covering conductivity (μS/cm) at 25°C, pH (5.5–7.5), viscosity, microbial count and appearance. ISO 9001 at minimum. Production samples. Leak-proof induction-sealed packaging. Legal Metrology-compliant labelling.

What is the typical wholesale price?

Mid-2026 Indian wholesale benchmarks: ₹30–55 per 250 ml bottle, ₹55–85 per 500 ml, ₹300–450 per 5 L jerry can [VERIFY against current quote].

Can ECG gel damage an ultrasound probe?

Yes, if used repeatedly. The salts in ECG gel can corrode the probe face and damage the acoustic matching layer over time. Use the correct gel for the device.
