Most disinfectant failures in facilities are not chemistry failures — they are dilution failures. Below are direct answers to the 12 questions most often asked about diluting concentrates.


What does a 1:64 dilution mean?

One part concentrate to 64 parts water — so 1 mL of concentrate plus 64 mL of water gives 65 mL of working solution. For 1 L of working solution: roughly 15 mL of concentrate plus 985 mL of water.


What's the right dilution for a quaternary ammonium concentrate?

Read the label. Typical use-dilutions sit between 1:64 and 1:256. Under-dilution wastes product; over-dilution does not disinfect.


What happens if I over-dilute?

The active concentration drops below the level that kills microbes at the labelled contact time. The surface looks clean but is not disinfected.


What happens if I under-dilute?

You waste product (cost), may damage some surfaces, and create a residue or film that can attract dirt or irritate skin.


What water should I use to dilute?

Cold or room-temperature tap water is fine for most quaternary ammonium and phenolic concentrates. Very hard water can reduce quat activity; bleach should use cool tap water (hot water releases chlorine gas faster).


Can I dilute disinfectant with hot water?

For most products, no. Heat can degrade active ingredients and, for bleach, accelerates chlorine gas release. Use cool or room-temperature water.


Does the working solution have a shelf life?

Yes — usually 24 hours for diluted bleach, 7–30 days for quaternary ammonium, and 24 hours for hydrogen peroxide-based products in open use. Make only as much as a shift will use; never reuse old solution.


Can I store diluted disinfectant?

Best practice: mix fresh daily for high-risk areas; weekly for low-risk. Store in clearly labelled containers — never decant to unlabelled bottles.


What mixing equipment do facilities use?

Dilution stations (proportional pumps), pre-measured sachets, calibrated measuring cups, or central-mixing systems that draw concentrate from a wall-mounted dispenser. The right equipment depends on volume and staff training.


Why is consistent dilution so important?

Because disinfection efficacy depends on the active concentration at the correct contact time. Variable dilution = variable disinfection = unpredictable outcomes. Audits trace failures back to dilution discipline.


Can I mix two concentrates together?

No. Bleach + quat inactivates the bleach. Acid + bleach releases chlorine gas. Phenolic + bleach forms irritants. Use one chemistry; rinse between if switching.

Test strips exist for quaternary ammonium and chlorine concentrations. Some facilities use them on every batch; others spot-check weekly. Strip-test logs are useful audit evidence.
