For surface disinfection, the right H₂O₂ concentration depends on:

1. Household surface disinfection — 3% H₂O₂

What 90% of household disinfection should use:

  • 3% H₂O₂ in spray bottle for bathroom, kitchen surfaces.

  • 5–10 minute contact time before wiping.

  • Bottle change every 60 days (loses strength once opened).

This is the right pick for kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, refrigerator interiors, cutting boards (rinse after), light mould stains, and general household disinfection. Cheap, effective, low risk.


2. Hospital / commercial wipe and spray — accelerated H₂O₂ at 0.5–1.4%

For institutional surface disinfection, accelerated H₂O₂ commercial formulations are the modern standard:

5. Industrial / food-packaging sterilisation — 30–35% food-grade H₂O₂

For aseptic-packaging operations (Tetra Pak style), 30–35% food-grade H₂O₂ is the industry standard. This is industrial-scale operation requiring proper handling, training, and equipment.


What NOT to do

  • Don't use 3% H₂O₂ as a general no-rinse food-contact sanitiser without verifying the application. Bleach or food-grade sanitiser may be more appropriate.

  • Don't store concentrated H₂O₂ (above 8%) in regular HDPE bottles without vented caps and dangerous-goods labelling.

  • Don't expect 3% H₂O₂ to handle norovirus outbreak — chlorine-based products are the standard.
