Antiseptic, Disinfectant, Sanitiser: What's the Difference and When to Use Each

Antiseptics are for use on living tissue (skin, mouth, wounds). Disinfectants are for use on non-living surfaces (floors, equipment, instruments). Sanitisers are products that reduce microbial load to a "safe" level — usually on hands or food-contact surfaces — but are not necessarily as strong as disinfectants. Mixing them up is one of the most common labelling and usage mistakes in home and small-business cleaning.

Antiseptic — for skin and wounds

An antiseptic is a chemical agent applied to living tissue to reduce the possibility of infection. The key word is living tissue — antiseptics are formulated to be effective against microbes while being gentle enough not to damage cells.

Common antiseptics:

  • Povidone-iodine (the brown solution used in clinics).

  • Chlorhexidine (used in mouthwashes and pre-surgical skin prep).

  • Hydrogen peroxide 3% (limited first-aid use only).

  • Surgical spirit (a denatured alcohol formulation).

Antiseptics are not the same as antibiotics — antibiotics work inside the body, antiseptics work on its surface.


Disinfectant — for surfaces and instruments

A disinfectant is a chemical agent applied to non-living surfaces to kill or significantly reduce microbial load. Disinfectants are usually too harsh for skin and would cause irritation or burns if applied directly.

Common disinfectants:

  • Phenolic compounds (used in hospitals and homes).

  • Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) (used in floor cleaners and surface sprays).

  • Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) (used for hard surfaces).

  • Hydrogen peroxide 3–6% in surface formulations (used in cleanrooms and hospitals).

Disinfectants are rated by what they kill — bactericidal, fungicidal, virucidal, sporicidal — and a label should declare which. Contact time on the label is the time the surface must stay wet to achieve the claimed kill.


Sanitiser — to reduce, not eliminate

A sanitiser reduces microbial load to a level considered safe. It is generally weaker than a disinfectant and is used where complete elimination is neither necessary nor practical — most commonly hands and food-contact surfaces.

Common sanitisers:

  • Alcohol-based hand rubs (60–80% alcohol).

  • Food-grade quat sprays for restaurant kitchen surfaces.

  • Citric- or lactic-acid based food-contact sanitisers.

Sanitiser is sometimes used loosely in marketing to mean "anything that kills germs" — for clarity, use the definition above.


A useful rule of thumb

If you can put it on your hand or in your mouth: it is an antiseptic (or a sanitiser, for hands). If it would burn or sting your skin: it is a disinfectant. If it sits between — gentle on hands, not strong enough for an operating theatre: it is a sanitiser.


Common mix-ups to avoid

  • Using a floor disinfectant on your skin. Phenolic and quaternary disinfectants can cause burns and rashes. Never use as hand wash.

  • Using an antiseptic to clean the kitchen counter. Povidone-iodine works on skin but is not formulated for surface disinfection — and it stains.

  • Using hand sanitizer to disinfect a surface. Alcohol gels evaporate too fast to deliver the contact time most surface pathogens need.

  • Diluting a disinfectant for skin use. Don't. If you need skin disinfection, buy an antiseptic.


Hand hygiene — antiseptic, sanitiser, or wash?

For hands:

  • Visibly soiled hands — soap and water wash. No antiseptic or sanitiser substitutes for it.

  • Hands that are not visibly soiled — alcohol-based sanitiser (60–80%) is faster and effective.

  • Pre-surgical hand prep — surgical scrub with antiseptic (chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine).

  • Healthcare worker between patients — alcohol-based sanitiser is the standard.

Is bleach an antiseptic, disinfectant, or sanitiser?

Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is a disinfectant for surfaces. It can be a sanitiser at very dilute concentrations for food-contact surfaces. It is not an antiseptic for skin use.


Can I use hand sanitizer to clean my phone?

You can wipe a phone screen with an alcohol-based sanitiser, but for sustained disinfection follow the device manufacturer's guidance. Many phone manufacturers recommend 70% IPA wipes for routine cleaning.


Is hydrogen peroxide an antiseptic or disinfectant?

Both, depending on concentration. Three-percent H₂O₂ has historically been used as a first-aid antiseptic (limited modern use); higher concentrations and surface formulations are used as disinfectants.


Are wet wipes disinfectants?

Most wet wipes are sanitisers — they reduce microbial load on hands or surfaces but are not always full disinfectants. Read the label: a wipe that claims to be a disinfectant will declare its active ingredient and required contact time.


Can I use a kitchen sanitiser as a hand sanitiser?

No. Food-contact sanitisers are formulated for hard surfaces, not skin. They may contain ingredients that are irritating to skin or that lack the alcohol content needed for effective hand hygiene.


Why do some products claim to be all three?

Some products are formulated to span uses — for example, alcohol-based hand rubs are both sanitisers (hands) and useful as quick surface wipes. But these claims should be read carefully on the label and accepted only where supported by efficacy data.


Are vinegar and citric acid disinfectants?

They have some antimicrobial activity but are not classified as hospital-grade disinfectants. They can be useful for general household cleaning but should not replace a labelled disinfectant where hygiene matters.


Do disinfectants kill viruses?

Some do, some don't. The label should declare whether the product is virucidal and against which viruses. Alcohol (70%), bleach, and hydrogen peroxide formulations are typically broad-spectrum virucidals at correct concentration and contact time.
